Bringing your pet to Dubai is not a problem. There are, however, some rules and procedures to follow:
  1. The animal needs to be chipped and hold a valid passport. Your local vet can help you arrange this and also inform you on vaccinations needed.
  2. A rabies vaccination needs to be at least 30 days old, but no more than 12 months old for a pet to be allowed to travel.
  3. Just before departure, you will need to see your vet again for a declaration of health for your pet.
  4. Importing a pet younger than four months is not allowed.
  5. Your pet doesn't need to be quarantined. You are obliged, however, to transport your pet as cargo.
  6. Some pedigrees are not allowed in Dubai:
    • Pitt Bull Terriers
    • American Staffordshire Terrier
    • Argentine Mastiff, or Argentine Dogo
    • Fila Brasileiro, or Brazilian Mastiff
    • Japanese Tosa, or Tosa Inu
Transport to Dubai
Animal transport can be arranged by De Haan. We are in close contact with several animal transportation companies. Naturally, it is fine to purchase an approved pet carrier on the day of departure, but we'd advise you to order a carrier from a renowned pet store beforehand. This allows your pet to get familiar with the pet carrier. This carrier has to meet certain specifications. A Vari carrier for example is IATA approved. At your local pet store they should be able to inform you on all the specifications and prizes.

Import license
Before you can book its flight, you need to apply for an import license for your pet in Dubai. There are organizations in Dubai that can arrange that for you. To apply for this license, you will need a photocopy or scan of your pets' passport as well as your own passport. It takes about 2 to 3 days to apply for the license and the license has a validity of 30 days, so proper planning is essential. Upon arrival, your pet will be examined by a local vet before getting clearance. The animal may be delivered at your house.

Please remember the working week in Dubai differs from Europe. Here, the weekend is on Friday and Saturday. Your best bet is to transport your pet on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, so it can reach your house at the earliest possible time.

Cargo or accompanied baggage?
Your pet will be shipped as cargo. Transporting your pet as accompanied baggage to Dubai is not possible. This makes no difference at all to the pet; they are stored in the same area on the plane. The difference is the price; cargo animal transport fees are much higher than accompanied baggage fees.

It is possible to arrange for your pet to be on the same flight as you. Zoo Logistics can do this. The animals travel in the belly of the plane in a dark, heated storage room. The monotonous drone of the engine quiets them down and usually, animals don't suffer much from their experience. Please don't give your cat or dog any sedatives. This will only make them nervous.

Pets in Dubai
As you may know, it gets very hot in summer. Temperatures of 47° Celsius are no exception in July and August. You can only walk your dog early in the morning or early in the evening. Should you take it out around noon, it could burn its paws. Cats are smarter this way, they will stay indoors. Depending on where you live, cats can go out a week or two after arrival. There are no fleas in Dubai, but applying any kind of flea- and tick treatment is recommended. We do have ticks! An occasional deworming is also recommended. There are several renowned, international veterinary practices in Dubai.
